My Approach

Transparency and vulnerability are two essential components needed to develop successful and fulfilling relationships with others. In both my practice as a social worker and as a peer writing consultant, I have worked on cultivating an environment where the clients I serve feel free to be vulnerable and transparent regarding their lived experiences. I believe that by creating an atmosphere that feels safe, welcoming, and nonjudgmental allows room for change to take place.

During each interaction with the clients I serve, my goal is to have them walk away feeling encouraged, empowered, motivated, heard, and valued. I accomplish this goal by utilizing positive affirmations, being present during each interaction, and by listening to understand instead of to respond.

When talking with the individuals I serve, I always point out their strengths rather than their weaknesses. In fact, I try to use strengths-focused language when discussing weaknesses. I utilize phrases such as “areas of improvement”, “areas of opportunity”, and “areas for continued growth”. This helps others to see that their weaknesses are not an inherent part of them and cannot be transformed into strengths. Rather, they learn to see their weaknesses as something they have not yet explored, which encourages them to evaluate ways in which they can make changes in those areas.

To encourage self-awareness and self-reflection, I utilize open-ended questions in interactions with the individuals I serve. The use of open-ended questions allows individuals to thoroughly express their thoughts, feelings, and concerns regarding a situation or problem they are experiencing. It also enables them to practice reflection on a particular situation or problem, which is helpful when beginning the process of forming a solution or plan of action.
